The guests set off on an automated vehicle tour of the park, while Hammond observes them along with Head Technician Ray Arnold and game warden Robert Muldoon. The tour kicks off to a slow start, as none of the dinosaurs are visible within their paddocks. Along the way, Grant spots a sick ''[[Triceratops]]'' and stops the tour so he and the others can observe it up close. Dr. Sattler discusses the sick Triceratops with the attending park doctor, while the rest gaze in wonder at the beast. With a storm heading in, everyone except Sattler returns to the vehicles to proceed with the tour.

Jurassic Park's head computer programmer, Dennis Nedry, is secretly in the employ of one of InGen's corporate rivals, and has been paid to steal some of Jurassic Park's dinosaur embryos. In order to evade detection and facilitate his escape from the island, Nedry sabotages several of the park's critical systems, including security, allowing him access to the embryo storage. The automated tour vehicles come to an unexpected stop, and the electric fences that surround the dinosaur pens go offline, allowing a ''[[Tyrannosaurus]]'' near the stopped tour group to escape. Gennaro flees from the vehicle to a nearby toilet, abandoning the terrified Tim and Lex. The T-Rex, attracted by Lex's waving flashlight beam, assaults their vehicle, flipping it upside down and crushing it with the children still inside. As Grant tries to rescue the children, the dinosaur pushes the vehicle over the side of a nearby embankment; he is able to rescue Lex, but Tim and the SUV wind up in a tree far below. Grant manages to rescue Tim just as the vehicle crashes to the ground through the branches. Malcolm, after trying to lure the T-Rex away with a road flare, becomes injured but manages to hide himself in some fallen foliage.

As Nedry flees from the park though the torrential rain, his Jeep becomes stuck. While he wraps the Jeep's winch cable around a tree, Nedry encounters a ''[[Dilophosaurus]]'', ignoring it due to its small size. The creature spits venom into his eyes, blinding him and causing him to drop the stolen embryos. He tries to escape into his Jeep, but another ''Dilophosaurus'' inside the vehicle kills him.
