Summary:
The journals began in 1943 and during those early years were written in small diary-type books, with several years contained in one book. Beginning in about 1970, it was one journal per year and they were written in red ‘daily reminder’ books which were standard diaries produced by Keith Clark. The journals capture Ms. Smith’s family and friends and daily life, including remarks on the weather, ordinary household chores, thoughts, emotions and activities. Also inserted and/or pasted in are event and funeral programs, tickets, postcards, business cards and pressed flowers. The Mary Carter Smith was a Baltimore City school teacher, originally from Alabama, who promoted and worked to revive storytelling as an art form and teaching method. This collection consists of Ms. Smith's journals from 1943-2003 and document her family, friends, and daily life. Inserted or pasted into the journals are ephemera, such as, postcards, pressed flowers, personal thoughts and activities. Smith received national acclaim as an educator along with the revival of storytelling as an art and teaching method. She is a member of the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame.

Summary:
"Desperate to quell her addiction to drugs, disastrous romance, and nineties San Francisco, Michelle heads south for LA. But soon it's officially announced that the world will end in one year, and life in the sprawling metropolis becomes increasingly weird. While living in an abandoned bookstore, dating Matt Dillon, and keeping an eye on the encroaching apocalypse, Michelle begins a new novel, a sprawling and meta-textual exploration to complement her promises of maturity and responsibility. But as she tries to make queer love and art without succumbing to self-destructive vice, the boundaries between storytelling and everyday living begin to blur, and Michelle wonders how much she'll have to compromise her artistic process if she's going to properly ride out doomsday. Michelle Tea is the author of numerous books, including Rent Girl, Valencia, and How to Grow Up. She is the creator of the Sister Spit all-girl open mic and 1997-1999 national tour. In 2003, Michelle founded RADAR Productions, a literary non-profit that oversees queer-centric projects"--
