      The focus of this essay is on the artistic value of Andrzej Bobkowski's prose and on his concern with writing as a craft. It highlights Bobkowski's affinity to Katherine Mansfield, a formative influence, as well as to several contemporary writers, particularly Thomas Merton, Albert Camus, Kazimierz Wierzyński, and Witold Gombrowicz. The essay also addresses the importance of Bobkowski's relationship with Jerzy Giedroyc in regard to his evolving self-definition as an aspiring writer. The opening paragraphs sketch Andrzej Bobkowski's route on his travels through Southwestern France in 1940, which constitutes perhaps the most enchanting part of his longest prosaic work, Szkice piórkiem [Wartime Notebooks].       Katherine Mansfield is most commonly viewed as a minor modernist writer, dealing in delicate half-tones with the domestic aspects of life. In this respect she is often compared with women painters such as Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, who have been presented in a similar way. I want to argue in the context of this volume that Mansfield is, as her husband John Middleton Murry claimed, a “great” writer. When, immediately after Mansfield’s death, Murry made his claim, D. H. Lawrence responded: “Poor Katherine, she is delicate and touching.—But not Great! Why say great?” (Letters 4:520). Why indeed? In Read less
