      Plains Indian drawings of the nineteenth century are a unique source of historical information. Drawn on hide and later on paper by men of many tribes, they were created expressly as records of actual events and real people. Thousands of drawings survive from the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth century. They constitute primary source material, offering an indigenous perspective on the past. In this article, the author presents alternative perspectives on three drawings. Each of these pictures is well known to people who study Plains art, and at least one is probably familiar to anyone who has scanned the literature on southern plains history. The discussions center around cultural principles rather than the scholarly literature about the images. Sometimes an individual holds specific information that helps to explain a drawing; at other times people are excited to learn from a picture, to gain information that is new to them. Read less
