The Absence of Philosophy in Library and Information Science.
Library Philosophy & Practice. 2023, p1-42. 42p.
This research explored the lack of a determined philosophical foundational tenet in the library and information science field. A literature review explored possible answers for what philosophy could stand as the guiding thought system for the field, including social epistemology, design epistemology, philosophy of information, structuralism and poststructuralism, consciousness, and monism. A pilot research study was designed and conducted with IRB approval using a survey aimed at professional librarians to gauge interest in the topic and to determine if further research would be necessary. The survey was posted to an online forum, ALA Connect, and held open for one month. Responses were analyzed in SPSS once the survey closed. The results suggest library school education on philosophy is limited, professionals do not have an agreed upon philosophy for the field, and the overall support for research to remedy this issue of a lack of determined philosophical foundational tenet exists. Significant findings relating to undergraduate degree and age and opinions on philosophy in LIS were identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Philosophy and Synergy of Information : Sustainability and Security
2012; Vol. 00093
The philosophy of information is one of the most exciting and fruitful areas of current philosophical research. Not only is it affecting the way in which new and old philosophical problems are addressed, but it is also creating a substantial innovation of the philosophical system. This book contains selected papers presented at the 2011 spring conference entitled ‘Philosophy and Synergy of Information: Sustainability and Security', held in Tbilisi, and supported by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme. The conference welcomed scientists from different disciplines and different countries, both eastern and western. They met to share their ideas, the results of their research and their experiences related to information science and technology, philosophy, the nature and culture of information and the problems of sustainable development for countries, regions and continents. Subjects covered include the latest innovations in informatics, forecasting, quantum information theory, nano information-communication systems and many more. Since ancient times, philosophers have been preoccupied with investigating life and security in the cosmos (world order). This book will be of interest to all those involved in that endeavor.

Detection of Conspiracy Narratives Using the Information Marker Method. A Study in the Methodology and Philosophy of Information
Ethics in Progress, Vol 14, Iss 2 (2023)
The article will present the main assumptions of the information marker method, which can be used for recognizing the characteristics of conspiracy theories conveyed in the content of informational messages – texts, statements, recordings, etc. The proposed method draws on the conspiracy thinking model CONSPIR (Lewandowsky & Cook 2020) and has a practical component. However, the technique presented in the paper constitutes a modification and addition to the original proposal. First, it deals with a problem frame that is different from that of CONSPIR, since it is applied to formulated information messages. Hence the marker method is not an instrument for analyzing cognitive attitudes or patterns of conspiracy thinking. Secondly, the proposed tool is profiled in terms of content focused on scientific issues (mainly pertaining to the natural and applied sciences). Third, given the characteristics and structure of the communication under consideration, I replace the widely used term “conspiracy theory” with the more universal concept of “conspiracy narrative,” which seems to reflect more adequately the specific features of such information messages. Fourth, given the more specific purpose of the marker method compared to that of the CONSPIR model, I will try (where possible) to refrain from citing specific examples of conspiracy narratives, referring to singular events and personal examples. Consequently, to use a phrase widely used in methodology, the presented technique can be applied to all cases of a given type.

An Information Ethics Theory in the Context of Information Philosophy: Flourishing Ethics
Entelekya Logico-Metaphysical Review, Vol 6, Iss 1, Pp 37-45 (2022)
Like all other inventions, advances in the field of digital computational technologies, which we will briefly describe as the information world, have also played an essential role in humanity life. These advances have brought some ethical debates to our individual and social life, as well as the industrial benefit obtained by the digital and analog technological developments that positively or negatively affect and transform all economic and cultural paradigms surrounding human life. The branch of the philosophy of information, which questions the basic issues and discussions of the information age through philosophical paradigms, deals with the ontological, epistemological, and axiological problems of the information age. The subject deals with the analysis and new results of an Aristotelian information ethics theory, which is a theory first proposed to the world of thought in the field of the philosophy of information. The main reason for dealing with this subject in the thesis is to examine the scientific, technological, and philosophical bases of the information revolution.

The Chinese philosophy of information by Kun Wu.
Journal of Documentation; 2021, Vol. 77 Issue 4, p871-886, 16p
Purpose: By introducing the basic concepts and theories of the philosophy of information created by Kun Wu, and making some comparisons of the philosophy of information and related information theories between Wu and other scholars, this paper aims to have Chinese philosophy of information widely known and understood by more people in the world, thus promoting the international exchanges between Chinese and Western scholars on the topic of philosophy of information. Design/methodology/approach: The main research methods used in this paper are the literature review and the comparative study. On the one hand, it reviews some related concepts and theories in Kun Wu's academic works of philosophy of information. On the other hand, it compares the thoughts and viewpoints of Kun Wu with those of other scholars. Findings: First, Kun Wu is the first person who has established a complete and comprehensive theoretical system of philosophy of information in China; second, Kun Wu's philosophy of information is significant in originality and value, which could be thought as the intellectual quintessence of information age, thus worth learning. Third, with more international exchanges, Chinese philosophy of information created by Wu will surely be more and more influential in philosophical circles at home and abroad. Originality/value: It is a very valuable first-hand material for Western scholars to know and understand Chinese philosophy of information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Philosophy of Information and the Problem of Its Understanding as Philosophia Prima
Profil, Vol 23, Iss 1, Pp 57-74 (2022)
This article first presents the philosophy of information (PI) and the demarcation of its subject in a methodologically comprehensive form, following L. Floridi's conception of PI. In contrast to his proposal, the subject of the metaphilosophy of information is singled out, and the term ‘philosophia prima’ is clarified as well. Floridi claims that his conception of PI can be understood as prima in relation to other philosophical disciplines. However, even twenty years after its introduction, the problem of understanding PI as philosophia prima has not received any significant direct reflection. In this study, the question is answered whether this problem is still an open problem of PI, and if so, in what sense. The thesis that the problem of understanding PI as philosophia prima is an open problem of metaphilosophy of information is defended, while, given the results of work in PI, some areas are identified relative to which we currently can, cannot, and are unable to label PI as prima.

The Library Language Game: Information Literacy Through the Lens of Wittgenstein's Language Games.
Communications in Information Literacy. 2021, Vol. 15 Issue 1, p104-118. 15p.
Labeling information is a precarious and risky enterprise. Catalogers have the task of fitting unique concepts within established and rigid language frameworks while also minimizing personal bias. The way information literacy librarians interact with labeled information also influences how users interact with information. Labeling moves beyond the role of categorizing; it also contributes to meaning making and knowledge building. Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations serves as a philosophical footing to illustrate how the labeling of things, in this case information, shapes the way we give things meaning. Critical librarianship and philosophy of information theory add to the discussion by considering how personal perspective, power, and bias to manipulate the game of naming information that takes place in the information literacy classroom. This paper is an invitation for librarians to reflect upon the relationship between labeling and how all users of information engage with labels and subsequently create meaning and knowledge. Uninformative Information : Informationsübertragung als irreführende Leitmetapher der Informationsgesellschaft
2019
