→‎NCAA violations and punishment: Results of both appeals
Bacchus66 (talk | contribs)
Zero is wrong for overall/conf wins in some or all of the 5 years with vacated wins. Setting 0 for wins removes 138, not the 108 wins that were actually vacated. Only wins with ineligible players played were vacated. No source yet for which wins by year.

On March 6, 2015, the NCAA suspended Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim for the first nine ACC games of the 2015–16 season and took away 12 scholarships over a four-year period, as a result of a multi-year investigation into the university's athletic programs. The program was forced to vacate 108 wins from the 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006–2007, 2010-2011, and 2011-2012. This constitutes the second-most wins ever permanently vacated by one program, behind the [[University of Michigan basketball scandal|113 wins vacated by Michigan]].<ref name="nyti_Faul">{{cite news | title = Faulting Coach Jim Boeheim, N.C.A.A. Upon two separate appeals, Boeheim's nine-game suspension was upheld as was the permanent vacating and erasure of 108 wins.<ref name=appealSYR>[http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/14222207/syracuse-orange-appeal-ncaa-sanctions-rewarded Syracuse Orange Appeal of Sanctions Rewarded], accessed December 26, 2015</ref><ref name=appealBOE>[http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/14281353/ncaa-upholds-9-game-suspension-syracuse-orange-coach-jim-boeheim NCAA Upholds 9 Game Suspension for Jim Boeheim], accessed December 26, 2015</ref> However, the number of scholarships lost by Syracuse was reduced to 8 over a four-year period, down from 12 over the same period.<ref name=appealSYR></ref>

This wasn't vandalism. Zero is just not correct for wins in most if not all of the five years Jim Boeheim had wins vacated for. The actual win values are not correct either of course, since all of those years had at least some wins vacated, and some may in fact have had all the wins vacated. But Syracuse had 138 wins in those five years (27-7, 23-12, 24-11, 27-8 and 34-3), and only 108 were vacated. Only those wins where players who were deemed to have been ineligible due to the violations actually played were vacated. However there has been no clear identification yet of which years lost how many wins. Just the total vacated. Since neither zero nor the original win values are valid, it mad more sense to have those values as ?'s. Especially since his career total had been correctly updated by removing those 108 wins.
