Domme. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful villages in all of France, visiting Domme offers a truly magical experience that is straight out of a fairytale. Domme is perched on top of a hill that overlooks Dordogne Valley and the flowing Dordogne River.

Just like everyone said, these are in the middle of nowhere so they're cheaper than living in a city. Warning: these properties might need a lot of work. They'll often be old farmhouses/country houses, tend to be very humid and have old, rudimentary plumbing and heating.

Many people choose to base themselves in Sarlat as it is a centrally located characterful town with good facilities but at the time you will be travelling it will be very crowded. Perhaps choose instead the lovely small town of Montignac on the Vezere river, or St Cyprien, a large village, for your base for a few days.
