Unity and Diversity in Torah Practices: A Johannine Vision for Contemporary Christian Communities.
Journal of European Baptist Studies. 2023, Vol. 23 Issue 2, p1-23. 23p.
Against the grain of much Johannine scholarship, this article offers a sustained argument against the notion that John's Jesus replaces sacred Jewish institutions and practices such as ritual purification, the temple, the Sabbath, and the Jewish festivals. Instead, I argue that John promotes a deeply appreciative and contextually sensitive vision of the Mosaic torah in which significant torah practices and institutions are retained, whilst also being reinterpreted, diversified, and sometimes relativised. This vision, in turn, has beneficial implications for Jewish-Christian dialogues and can provide wisdom in contemporary debates about the role of Jewish institutions and practices in Christian communities. Torah, Temple, Land : Constructions of Judaism in Antiquity
2021; Vol. 00184
The present volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in October 2018 at Humboldt University Berlin. The articles reflect the different categories of describing Judaism of the Second Temple Period in view of their sustainability in characterising an ancient religious community in different historical situations and discuss relevant (re)constructions of ancient Judaism in the history of scholarship. Since the Persian period, ancient Judaism existed in a world which was in constant flux regarding its political, social, and religious contexts. Consequently, Judaism was subject to permanent processes of change in its self-perception as well as its external perception. In all complexity, however, the Torah, the Temple(s) as a place where heaven meets the earth, and the'holy'or'promised'land as the dwelling place of God's people can be regarded as institutions to which all kinds of Judaism in the Babylonian and Egyptian dispora as well in Israel/Palestine were related in some way or another.

The transformation of order in narrative as discordant concord: Using Paul Ricoeur to explore narrative realism as part of social morphogenesis.
Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour. Jun2022, Vol. 52 Issue 2, p260-278. 19p. 1 Diagram.
Social interaction as the middle phase of the morphogenetic sequence described by Margaret Archer presupposes that interpretative activities go on between individuals and collectivities. Novel meanings emerge in social interaction and spur the processes of structural elaboration. The hermeneutics of actors (or agents) should be part of the morphogenetic explanatory framework. Narratives as a distinctive species of interpretation will then become more susceptible to a mode of analysis based in realism. By adopting Paul Ricoeur's concept of narrative figuration (or threefold mimésis) for use in sociology, it is possible to embark on this task at the rudimentary level of intersubjective communication. The stories and anecdotes in which we describe episodes, events, and processes to others articulate and give order to our experience of time. When we are searching for concord in narratives to cope with discordant elements, we are participating in morphogenesis via the transformation of meaning. The complementary nature of Archer's and Ricoeur's conceptualisations provides an alternative to one‐sided social constructionist accounts of narrative [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global American Higher Education: Diversity, Unity, Mutuality.
Change. May/Jun2023, Vol. 55 Issue 3, p28-36. 9p.
Cross-border American higher education is often conflated with international branch campuses. But there are other institutional forms, such as microcampuses, international joint universities, and independent universities. The different forms developed at different times with different missions and serve different roles. Reflecting on their histories and functions provides an opportunity to appreciate the scope and variety of American higher education abroad. Contemporary relations among higher education institutions are often viewed through a lens of competition. But careful consideration of American institutions abroad demonstrates a history of collaboration. The principle of mutuality provides a framework to help international campuses to operate in ways that oppose colonialism. Stateside educators can be key partners for colleagues overseas. Continued and expanded collaboration will be critical in the years ahead when the geopolitical environment for international education is uncertain at best. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HERBERT'S THE TEMPLE AS EARLY MODERN PSYCHOMACHIA.
Renascence. Summer/Fall2022, Vol. 74 Issue 3/4, p211-251. 41p.
In the article, the author examines the poetry of George Herbert, particularly those contained in his book "The Temple" (The Church) as reflections of early modern psychomachia. Also cited are the depiction of human grief, puzzlement, strife, and joy in Herbert's poems "The Sacrifice" and "Church Porch," as well as the rhetorical precedent and anthropological consistency of Herbert's poetic consciousness.
