Sand Mafias.
Scientific American. Feb2024, Vol. 330 Issue 2, p60-67. 8p. 2 Graphs, 3 Cartoon or Caricatures.
Sand mining is a global issue with devastating environmental impacts and involvement of organized crime. The demand for sand, used in concrete, is high and unsustainable, leading to the destruction of ecosystems, disruption of marine life, and increased flooding. The illegal sand trade, worth billions of dollars annually, is often overlooked due to sand being seen as a mundane resource. China has the highest demand for sand, but other countries like Morocco and Mozambique also engage in illegal sand mining. The depletion of sand resources poses a serious threat to water supply, vegetation, and wildlife. Efforts are being made by individuals like Yusuf and Abderrahmane to address these issues and promote sustainable practices, but more research and international cooperation are needed to combat illegal sand extraction and protect the environment. Middle Management Is the Key to Sustainability.
Harvard Business Review. Nov/Dec2023, Vol. 101 Issue 6, p102-111. 10p. 4 Color Photographs.
While the executive in charge of the sustainability function plays the starring role in any social or environmental initiative, its success often depends on an organization’s hidden heroes: its critical midlevel team leaders. But how this group drives sustainability will vary with a company’s sustainability maturity. In their work the authors have identified four levels of it and goals and actions that are appropriate for middle managers at each one. At level one, lagging and skeptical, middle managers should focus on getting sustainability on the agenda by exploring customer demand, gathering outside perspectives, and finding easy wins. At level two, building a base, the goal is to develop capabilities and start to embed sustainability into core processes. At level three, accelerating, middle managers increase the speed and scale of efforts through internal councils and by increasing transparency and rethinking business activities. At level four, leading, middle managers strive to build lasting sustainability infrastructure and set up transformative partnerships in their sectors or value chains. With the right skills and priorities, the unsung champions of sustainability can drive progress within companies at any level and across industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Time100 Climate Powered by TIMECO2. (cover story)
TIME Magazine. 12/4/2023, Vol. 202 Issue 19/20, p48-68. 21p. 19 Color Photographs.
This article discusses the increasing trend of businesses taking direct action to combat climate change. It provides examples of influential leaders in various industries who are making significant strides in reducing carbon emissions and implementing sustainable practices. The article emphasizes the importance of business leadership and mobilizing capital to address climate change, while also highlighting the need for greater awareness and recognition of positive actions taken by businesses. The text features statements from individuals involved in different sectors, all emphasizing the importance of government policies, corporate sustainability efforts, renewable energy investments, and conservation initiatives to address climate change and protect the environment. The individuals stress the significance of collaboration, innovation, and the role of various sectors in achieving a sustainable future. One example is Miguel Torres Riera, CEO of Bodegas Torres, who highlights the importance of collaboration and sharing best practices in the wine industry to accelerate decarbonization efforts. Bodegas Torres is part of the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), a group of 45 wineries worldwide working together to reduce their carbon footprint. Riera believes that cooperation within the industry is crucial to becoming a reference for other sectors in terms of sustainability. The document also includes statements from individuals involved in climate activism and sustainability efforts, including CEOs, government officials, and Indigenous leaders. They emphasize the need for action, investment, and accountability in addressing climate change, and highlight the importance of diverse approaches, such as carbon labeling, renewable energy, adaptation programs, and Indigenous-led solutions. The document also underscores the need for global cooperation [Extracted from the article]

The Evolving Role of Chief Sustainability Officers.
Harvard Business Review. Jul/Aug2023, Vol. 101 Issue 4, p76-85. 10p. 4 Black and White Photographs.
The role of the CSO is undergoing a rapid and dramatic transformation. Historically CSOs have acted like stealth PR executives—their primary task was to tell an appealing story about corporate sustainability initiatives to the company’s many stakeholders. Now, however, some CSOs have moved away from a role centered on messaging and instead are spearheading the true integration of material ESG (environmental, social, and governance) issues into corporate strategy. This pivotal change requires close collaboration with other members of the senior leadership team and active engagement with investors. This article argues for four major changes to the CSO role. The CSO should be involved in strategy and capital allocation; be more focused on and realistic about stakeholder interactions; be more fully engaged with investors; and be supported with sufficient resources and expertise throughout the entire organization, including on the board and senior leadership team. In an ideal world, the authors say, a stand alone CSO role would become obsolete once companies fully integrate ESG considerations into their corporate strategy and operations. Until that day arrives, however, it is crucial to adapt and evolve the CSO role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
