He was editor of the Gazzetta di Milano from 1792 to 1796, but his anti-French sentiments got him in trouble during the French occupation of Lombardy and he moved to Vienna. He wrote biographies of Joseph Haydn and Gioachino Rossini, the former of which was famously plagiarized by Stendhal.
